Modern Synthetics in Everyday Life. Myths and Facts

Synthetic fabrics have long become a part of our daily lives. From sportswear and home textiles to car seats and interior items – materials of artificial origin surround us everywhere. However, many myths about them still persist, some inherited from the early days of synthetic materials in the 20th century.

Myth 1. Synthetics “don’t breathe” and cause discomfort

In the past, this was indeed close to the truth. The first polyester fabrics did not allow air to pass through and caused unpleasant sensations when worn.

Today, things are different. The structure of modern synthetic fabrics is very similar to that of natural ones. The only difference is that the fibers forming the fabric are made from synthetic material. Moreover, modern technologies make it possible to create fibers with micropores and capillary structures that provide ventilation and moisture wicking. Such materials are widely used in sportswear, underwear, and even medical textiles.

Myth 2. Synthetic materials are harmful to the skin

In reality, most modern synthetic fabrics are hypoallergenic and antibacterial. They are certified according to international safety standards. Often, while offering the advantages of natural materials, they lack their drawbacks.

Additionally, skin irritation is often caused not by the fabric itself, but by dyes or poor-quality finishing. Therefore, it is important to choose products from trusted manufacturers and pay attention to labeling.

Myth 3. Natural fabrics are always better

Natural fibers – cotton, linen, wool, silk – do have many benefits. But synthetics have evolved. Modern textiles continue to improve, offering materials that rival natural ones while remaining more affordable and having stable, controllable properties.

Many modern materials surpass their natural counterparts in durability, elasticity, resistance to moisture, and UV protection. For example, polyester and nylon retain their shape for a long time, do not wrinkle, and are easy to clean – making them an ideal choice for everyday use.

Myth 4. Synthetics wear out quickly

On the contrary, modern synthetic fibers are highly durable, resistant to moisture, dirt, and odors. Polyamides and polyesters can withstand hundreds of washing cycles – when cared for properly – without losing their appearance.

Moreover, synthetic threads are often blended with natural fibers, such as cotton, to achieve the optimal balance between comfort and longevity.

Myth 5. Synthetics are harmful to the environment

This is one of the most discussed issues. Indeed, traditional synthetic materials are derived from petroleum, and their decomposition takes decades.

However, the truth is that the industry is rapidly changing. Biosynthetic fibers made from renewable resources, recycled plastic, or plant-based components are emerging. Many companies are adopting textile recycling technologies to reduce their carbon footprint.

Modern synthetics: A balance of practicality and responsibility

Modern synthetic fabrics are the result of decades of scientific research. They are lightweight, strong, functional, and aesthetically pleasing. The key is to understand that the quality of synthetics depends not on their origin but on the production technology and integrity of the brand.

Synthetics are no longer a symbol of “artificiality,” but rather a tool that helps us live more comfortably, save resources, and create new opportunities for sustainable development.
